Toyota Fortuner has been a burly SUV that despite costing a bomb managed to sell in large numbers. This was because of the quality, reliability, power and performance being packed in the car by the makers. Since its launch in year 2009, the Japanese manufacturers had not introduced any changes in the car until now. The Japanese carmaker has finally launched the SUV with the hopes of new model taking the brand to steeper heights. The Fortuner for the first time is available in a petrol motor with the diesel mill. Toyota dealerships have started bookings and deliveries for the Fortuner from the 7th November, 2016.
Toyota Fortuner Exteriors
The new ladder frame chassis is the basis for its all new design. The front comprises of a twin slat chrome grill with Toyota emblem in the centre which is flanked by vertical chrome strips and powerful auto Bi-beam projector and dusk sensing headlamps with LED elements. There’s a silver skid plate and fog lamps are placed in triangular housing at the bottom front. Coming to the sides, it gets 18 inch (17 inch on 2WD version) alloy wheels covered by all-weather tyres, illuminated scuff plates and electrically foldable ORVM. The roof is fitted with a shark fin antenna with satin finish roof rails. The wrap-around rear windows and blacked out side pillars give it a vengeful look. The rear gets wing shaped tail lamps and fog lamps whereas the wrap around rear windshield comes with wiper and defogger. The rear end and front also comes with under run plates for off-roading. The chrome garnish has been used in abundance around the whole design of the new Fortuner.
Toyota Fortuner Interiors
For the insides, Toyota has used a lot of leather, high grade plastic and metallic inserts to uplift the ambience of the cabin. Entering is easy in dark due to illuminated cabin lights, the headroom, leg room and shoulder room will be much more compared to the previous model due to the increased wheelbase of 2745 mm. The tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel is leather wrapped with wood grain on top and gets controls for cruise feature, volume adjustment and mobile telephony. Front seats in the Fortuner get 8-way power adjustable driver seat whereas second row gets captain seats with armrests and cup holders and a shopping hook placed at back of the front seat helps in holding cargo onboard. The second row can be 60:40 reclined and folded to access the third row. The third row gets one-touch tumble function to fold it and even gets a 12V charging socket. One can get a boot space of 300 litres despite keeping all three rows up.
Toyota Fortuner Dimensions
The Toyota Fortuner is massive from all the proportions and its sheer size is enough to intimidate the fellow drivers on the roads. The new model is keeping up the legacy with the measurements of this model being 4,795mm in length, 1,855mm in width and 1,835mm in height. The wheelbase in the SUV is a massive 2745 mm while the ground clearance is 193 mm. It can also hold 80 litres of fuel in one go.
Toyota Fortuner Features
In terms of features the new Fortuner comes fully loaded with a 7 inch touch screen infotainment screen which also has Toyota Link connectivity, USB, AUX-in and DVD player, GPS navigation and 6-speakers. Automatic climate control, leather wrapped steering wheel, push start/stop button, smartkey, power windows with anti-pinch functionality as well as one touch up and down option make it a comfortable and practical SUV to live with. Toyota has put in latest gen Optitron instrument cluster, TFT Multi-information display, cooled glove box and electric tailgate make it much better than the previous offering. The performance aspect has been further improved by adding sequential shift and paddle shifters at back of steering wheel for the automatic versions. The 2016 Toyota Fortuner also gets dual driving modes- PWR/ ECO to improve efficiency.
Toyota Fortuner Safety Features
Toyota Fortuner underpins the chassis of the highly acclaimed Hilux pickup truck that is near indestructible. That is the reason, the SUV earned 5 stars in the Latin and Australasian NCAP crash tests and this means that the occupants of the new Fortuner will remain safe even in the most testing conditions. On top of that, it comes with 7 SRS airbags with manual cut-off switch, ABS (anti-lock braking system) with EBD (electronic brake distribution), Brake assist, hill-start assist control (HAC), vehicle stability control (VSC), emergency stop signal (ESS), downhill assist control (DAC), trailer sway control (TSC), Active traction control (A-TRC). That’s not all as 2017 Toyota Fortuner comes with emergency stop signals, Child restrain system with ISOFIX and Tether Anchor on 2nd row. Toyota Fortuner Engine
For the first time, the Toyota Fortuner is available in a petrol variant that is the same unit doing the duties in the Innova Crysta which is a 2.7 litre, 4-cylinder engine producing 165 bhp and 245 nm of torque. The petrol mill is mated to a 5 speed manual or a 6 speed auto transmission with paddle shifters but comes with only a 2WD drivetrain. On the other hand, the diesel engine is a 2.8 Litre GD diesel which produces 174 bhp @ 3400 rpm with a peak torque of 420 nm @ 1600- 2000 rpm (Manual transmission) while the Auto transmission is capable of 450 nm of torque. The diesel hauler comes with a choice of 2WD and AWD drivetrain.
Toyota Fortuner Mileage
The new model is better in terms of fuel efficiency as the new GD engines are said to be at least 10% more fuel efficient than the KD series which is presently doing the duties. The petrol motor with AT (auto transmission) gives mileage of 10.26 kmpl while MT (manual transmission) is good for 10.01 kmpl. The diesel as expected is frugal with the MT 2WD capable of 14.24 kmpl whereas AT 2WD giving 12.9 kmpl. The MT 4WD (4 wheel drive) and AT 4WDare give a fuel efficiency of 14.24 kmpl and 12.9 kmpl respectively.
Toyota Fortuner Variants
Petrol variant will be available for the buyers to choose from 4X2 (MT) or 4X2 (AT). The company on the other hand will provide diesel trims in 4X2 (MT), 4X2 (AT), 4X4 (MT) and 4X4 (AT).

The India-bound Toyota Fortuner is available in a choice of 7 different colour options –Phantom brown, super white, grey metallic, attitude black, silver metallic, avant grade bronze and white pearl crystal shine.

The new Toyota Fortuner was the unprecedented king of the premium SUV market and was the first choice of all those who craved a powerful road presence. Only the new Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Hyundai Santa Fe and Mahindra XUV500 are capable of posing a threat to the Fortuner.
Toyota Fortuner Price
Toyota has always provided quality products but has charged them generously as well. The Fortuner Base petrol variant will be retailed at a price of INR 25,92,000 while the base diesel variant comes for INR 27,52,000.
