In recent times, SUV’s are the latest vogue of town and Tata Motors seems to have chose the right pattern for their upcoming vehicles in India. The company is anticipated to launch a total of three vehicles this year in the country, of which, the Nexon – a compact SUV will be the one. Tata revealed this vehicle for the first time at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.
Therefore its production version is highly speculated to look similar as the concept vehicle and will carry a futuristic style statement. Moreover, it is also being said that it will provide high-end safety features which would be the biggest USP. The automaker is expected to launch the compact SUV in both petrol and diesel variants.
Internally, this vehicle is code named as “Osprey” or the “X104”. It is based on X1 platform which also underpins the Tata Bolt hatchback and the Tata Zest sedan. The starting price for Tata’s compact SUV- the Nexon is expected to be somewhere around INR 7 lakh.
Tata Nexon – Exterior
Irrespective of following the exact design cues from the concept vehicle, its contemporary and elegant appearance makes the baby SUV look modern and fresh. Some of its design bits seem to have also been inspired from Tata’s new age vehicles such as the Tiago, Bolt and the Zest. With an aggressive stance up front, it is embellished with lots of chrome for that adds extra bling to it.
The front for that matter caters to a piano black grille with integrated sleek headlamps on either sides that are expected to be LEDs along with daytime running lamps and the company’s insignia draped in chrome located in centre lends it a strong appeal to lure young customers. Rest the roofline bends sharply towards the rear which makes it look like a coupe merged with Tata’s signatory functionality and strength. Engineers at Tata Motors have worked equally hard in making the tail gate an interesting proposition. Thus it features conical shaped tail lights which seems to be created immaculately. It rides on 17-inch multi spoke alloy wheels. Talking about the dimensions, this vehicle measures 3,995mm in length, 1,600mm in height, 1,730mm in width and has a wheelbase of 2,470mm. Thanks to the 200mm ground clearance, it will be a perfect vehicle to ooze over all sorts of Indian terrains.
Tata Nexon – Interior
Interior of Tata’s new compact SUV- Nexon looks very much reminiscent with the recently launched Tiago hatchback. It comes loaded with wide array of modern day connectivity features and comfort. Is bestowed with a conventional designed dashboard, three-spoke steering wheel with mounted controls and a centre console design which is sourced from its hatchback cousin.
All in all, it will have a provision of the utmost modern elements which are dedicated to the future of cars. Finally stitched leather upholstery, height-adjustable driver seat along with the option of folding seats and the next generation Harman Kardan infotainment system will make the cabin feel a nice place to be in. From the safety aspect, the upcoming compact SUV is expected to be loaded with elements like the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Program (ESP), engine immobilizer and multiple airbags to name a few.
Tata Nexon – Engine
The company will offer this compact SUV in both petrol and diesel, powertrain options. The petrol variant will be propelled by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder turbocharged engine that mills out a maximum power of 89 bhp alongside a peak torque of 140Nm. The diesel variant on the other hand, is expected to derive power from an all-new developed 1.5-litre diesel motor producing 108 bhp and 260Nm of torque. However, there is sparse information about both the diesel and petrol powertrains as of now!
Rumors also suggest that the petrol unit will be paired to a five-speed manual transmission whereas the diesel powered vehicle will send power to the wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox.
