Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker is working on a seven-seater version of its popular tall-boy hatchback- the Maruti Wagon R. The company is already selling the Ertiga facelift as its MPV offering, but the Wagon R based MPV will be a sub-compact car. MSI has imported two units of the Wagon R 7-seat MPV- Codenamed YJC – into India for research and development purpose. The MPV was first unveiled as a concept at the 2013 Indonesia International Motor Show. Interestingly, Maruti has already shared the list of components to its vendors required for the development of the sub-compact MPV. It is likely to cost around INR 80,000 more than the regular variant.
Maruti YJC Wagon R 7-seater MPV styling
It is expected that the next Wagon R MPV will get a much better styling than its rivals. The company is yet to reveal the production-ready model of the car. It will share the styling cues and platform with the standard five-seater WagonR. It will get high ground clearance, but the wheelbase of the siblings will remain unchanged. The overall length will be increased to accommodate an extra-row of seats. The 7-seater MPV is 3,700 long that is around 100mm longer than the hatchback sibling while the height, width and wheelbase is expected to remain unchanged.

The new compact MPV will be made available with both petrol and diesel fuel options. While the diesel version could get a 0.8-litre twin-cylinder DDiS 125 engine that also powers the Celerio. Interestingly, the company has imported two units of Wagon R MPV that features 1.2-litre K-Series petrol and 1.3-litre DDiS diesel that powers the Swift hatchback. The company might also introduce the MPV with 1.0-litre K-Series engine.
