India’s leading automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has been innovating in the Indian car market since long and holds almost 48 per cent market share in terms of overall production output. The auto major is enjoying yet another success with recent launches such as Maruti Baleno and the Maruti Vitara Brezza. Recently-launched Baleno is more or less priced in the vicinity of Swift’s and as result has been cannibalizing sales of this once upon a time hot selling hatch. If rumors are to be believed, in order to keep their popularity growing in their respective zones the company is contemplating on phasing out one of their older models (which is highly expected to be the Ritz) to accommodate the upcoming premium hatchback in its product gamut. Therefore come 2017 -18, customers can expect a new Swift to make its way into the Indian market.
As of now, details are sketchy as there is no concrete information about the forthcoming product. But going with the trend, the upcoming Maruti Swift will be much more modern and a feature laden vehicle. Internally, it has been code-named as YSD. Its test mule has been spotted on many occasions in the International arena as Spy images reveal more information about the hatch. It boasts of a futuristic exterior as well as interior design while promising to be really sporty.
Similar to the current generation, the Swift facelift will also sit below the Baleno in the company’s product portfolio. Irrespective of several changes on the outside and inside, this vehicle will continue to carry forward the legacy of its original overall silhouette and design.
2017 Maruti Swift Exterior –
The upcoming Swift gets some significant changes upfront. In spite of retaining the similar design to its predecessor, it does benefit from many sporty design elements. It features a newly designed hexagonal grille, revised sweptback headlamps and a floating roof. Also, much like the Chevrolet Beat and the Mahindra KUV100, its rear door handles have been inched towards the C-pillar. Albeit, it is not confirmed that the production ready model will get these conventional door handles at rear or a newly designed one visible in spy pictures. At the rear, there are all-new wraparound tail lamps which give it a distinctive appeal.
Having said that, the forthcoming iteration might share its platform with the recently launched Baleno premium hatch. With 41 per cent of tensile steel and lightweight chassis, it will be lighter and robust in nature than the soon to be phased out version. Also, this aluminum-mix platform could reduce around 50-70kg of weight, making its underpinning rigid for Indian road conditions.
2017 Maruti Swift Interior-
Like its exteriors, changes on the interior will be more comprehensive. The cabin will be bestowed with a newly-designed three-spoke steering wheel equipped with mounted controls for audio, Bluetooth and telephony. There will be revised HVAC controls with circular vents located in the centre, a twin-pod speedo cluster with a large Multi-Information Display (MID), a touchscreen SmartPlay infotainment system and automatic climate control with integrated digital display on offer. Undoubtedly, this cabin will be a lot more premium than that of the current version.
2017 Maruti Swift Engine –
Under the hood, the Swift facelift is most likely to see a 1.0-Litre Boosterjet petrol engine. This all-aluminum motor is anticipated to churn out 110 Bhp and 175Nm of peak torque. In addition to this, there are also chances that Maruti will replace the 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine with Suzuki’s new 1.5-litre diesel unit to offer improved fuel efficiency and more power. There could be two transmissions in the offering – an AMT/ CVT and a five speed manual gearbox.
Alongside this, the company is also planning to introduce a new Swift Sport trim to the line-up. This variant might see a 1.4-litre Boosterjet motor that also powers the Suzuki Vitara S. The engine will produce a maximum of 136 Bhp against 220Nm of peak torque. The engine will be paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox.
Safety highlights will include improved braking with next generation ABS with Motor Speed Regulation System, reverse parking sensors & camera, dual SRS airbags and brake assist system.
2017 Maruti Swift Competition-
Maruti Swift facelift will continue to lock its horn with Hyundai Elite i20 and Volkswagen Polo.
