The premium hatchback segment was majorly dominated by Hyundai Elite i20 followed by other players from Honda, Fiat and Volkswagen. So, Maruti Suzuki India country’s leading auto manufacturer decided to bring-in its all-new player in the segment. Christened as Maruti Baleno, it was launched in the Indian market with an introductory price of INR 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The hatchback received overwhelming response from the market, as the company bagged about 4600 bookings in just two days prior to its launch.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Exterior
As Maruti Baleno is based on all-new platform, it gets a lustrous liquid flow design that appeals every angle of this premium hatchback. The front fascia is highlighted by V-shaped grille which is boared with chrome ribbon at the bottom. It also gets Swift hatchback inspired sweptback headlamps. The front bumper houses two horizontal DRLs that add an additional appearance to the profile. Coming to the sides, it comes with swelled up wheel arches with 16-inch alloy wheels and a decent looking curve that runs across the lower half of the doors. The rear profile accentuates the rear window and a spoiler on the top. The tail lamps are compactly designed and come wrapped slightly around the edges. The rear bumper is extensively huge which comes with small reflectors on either side. Dimensionally, Baleno measures 3995mm in length, 1745mm in width and 1500mm in height, and gets a wheelbase of 2520mm along with large ground clearance of 170mm. The top end variant gets 16-inch alloy wheels while the lower and mid-level variants come with 15-inch wheels. Maruti Suzuki Baleno is offered in 6 different exterior tones – Granite Grey, Premium Urban Blue, Solid Fire Red, Metallic Premium Silver, Autumn Orange, Pearl Arctic White and Ray Blue.

On the inside, Baleno also comes with premium factor with all kinds of comfort features incorporated in the cabin. Feature wise, it comes with climate control, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and rear parking assist are some of the features that we can expect on this premium hatch. Though black colour dominates the interiors, silver accents housed excellently around the air vents, on the centre console and the centre tunnel enhance the overall appeal. It also gets a huge boot space of 339-litres which is sufficient enough to house luggage for longer journeys.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Engine and performance
Maruti Suzuki Baleno shares its power unit with Swift hatch and is offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines. The 1.2 litre petrol unit produces 83bhp of power output with 115Nm of peak torque while the diesel unit comes with a 1.3 litre unit that develops max power of 73bhp and peak torque of 190Nm. The transmission duties are carried out by a 5 speed manual transmission and a CVT automatic for the petrol variant while the diesel motor gets a 6-speed manual. In terms of fuel efficiency, the petrol and diesel variants return fuel economy of 21.4kmpl and 27.39kmpl respectively.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno Safety features
As far as the safety factor is concerned, MSI has always emphasized on safety features being incorporated in its cars. Baleno is not different as it comes with dual airbags, ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) with EBD (Electronic BrakeForce Distribution), anti-theft security system, front seat-belf pre-tensioners and force limiters and driver seat belt reminder as standard. However, the high-end variant sports reverse parking camera and sensors, rear defogger, auto headlamps and front fog lamps, etc.

Talking about the price, the Maruti Baleno is priced in the range of INR 5.15 lakh to INR 8.32 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). In terms of competition, Baleno locks horns against rivals such as Honda Jazz, Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and Fiat Punto Evo.
