Maruti Suzuki India has officially announced the inclusion of special edition MS Dhoni variant for the Alto 800 model. Priced more by INR 12,777 than the regular variant of Alto 800, the special edition will be available across all the outlets from the first week of next month. Moreover, the company has also initiated a special contest as well wherein the winners stand a chance to meet MS Dhoni and other cast from the movie. However, no mechanical changes seen on the special edition and continues to sport the same 0.8-litre 3-cylinder petrol which comes mated to 5-speed manual gearbox.
Evolution is a continuous process and when referred to automobiles it becomes even more important. Similar is the case with Maruti Suzuki Alto 800. Alto brand name need's no introduction as it is one of the most recognized small car in the country. Originally, the Alto 800 bears the legacy of the iconic Maruti 800 which used to be one of the most popular hatchbacks erstwhile and takes forward the moniker of the 800. With rapidly growing competition in the Indian car market, India’s largest automaker has recently brought in a refreshed iteration of the people's most favorite entry-level hatchback.
Overall, the car looks similar, however, the 2016 model boasts a host of changes on the outside as well as on the inside. With this updated model, the company has tried to revive its value for money legacy by putting in a new life into the product while maintaining its old school charm which was preferred by a perspective Indian consumer.
Maruti Alto 800 facelift – Exterior
Maruti has always depended more upon simplicity rather than a radical design approach which has paid off great dividends to the company in the manner in which this particular model sells throughout the country. In fact the recent introduction – 2016 Alto 800 facelift now brings forward a few minor upgrades keeping its overall design intact. Therefore latest upgrades include a revised bumper, grille, new turn indicators, wheel caps and headlights. These changes provide a robust stance to the car and makes it look like a grown up kid in the block.
Its hexagonal grille has been hammered to make it look sharper and moreover now accommodates squarish designed headlamps. Presence of a trapezoidal air intake along with the provision of fog lamps that were non-existent in the earlier model further enhances the appeal. While the side profile remains unchanged with the rear featuring very minor upgrade in the form of reworked tail lights and the bumper.
Dimensionally, the updated hatchback’s overall length is now increased to 3,430mm from 3,395mm. Thanks to the newly designed bumpers. Apart from the length, other dimensions remain same. It measures 1,490mm in width, 1,475mm in height and 2,360mm in wheelbase. The ground clearance of this vehicle stands at 160mm.
On the exterior front, the special edition MS Dhoni Alto 800 comes with new body decals which flaunt Dhoni’s signature and a rear spoiler. Moreover, the car maker is also offering Dhoni inspired merchandise on the edition.
Maruti Alto 800 Facelift – Interior
Like the exterior design, the interiors of this facelifted hatchback gets a few minor tweaks. These are in the form of new fabric upholstery for door pads and seats. The base trim now comes with a passenger side exterior mirror while the Lxi and Vxi versions receive additional storage space at the rear. The top of the line variant offers features like child safety lock, an audio head unit with elements like a USB port, AUX connectivity but minus a CD player. On the things like front power windows, central locking and rear spoiler have been retained from the out going model as standard fitments depending upon the variant selected.
On the inside, the Maruti Alto MS Dhoni Edition is offered in two colour combinations – Black/Silver and Red/Blue. It also gets accessories such as steering wheel cover, ambient lighting, bar graph display for the parking sensors, an interior styling kit in carbon colour and new seat covers with number 7.
Maruti Alto 800 Facelift – Engine
Unlike its exterior and interior enhancements, the engine specifications for the facelifted version remain the same as before. Thus it features the same 0.8 0.8-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine that is tuned to churn out a maximum power of 47bhp @6,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 69Nm @3,500 rpm. Power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission. Like before, Maruti is also offering a CNG variant of this vehicle along side its petrol variants.
Maruti Alto 800 Facelift – Competition
The entry level hatchback market is the most populated segment with numerous offerings. This latest entrant which is priced at INR 2.49 – 3.34 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi) will surely give consumers something new to think about. While another yet to be launched vehicle Redi-Go hatch from Datsun will surely give this segment leader some competition. Other counterparts within this segment include names of Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid and Tata Nano GenX.
