Ford India today launched the facelift version of compact SUV – EcoSport in Indian market with a price tag of INR 6.79 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). This new EcoSport facelift gets some considerable style and features additions thus indicating company's intention for increasing the sale numbers this festive season.
Launched back in 2013, this compact SUV from Ford became an immediate success in the compact SUV segment in India. With very less competition and radical styling it soon became popular among the buyers, with the company failing to match with the demand in the starting stages of its launch.
The exterior styling of Ford EcoSport is a synonym for the word compact. Sporting an aggressive and muscular design philosophy, the vehicle has numerous sharp creases to flaunt. Dominating the view up front is an Aston Martin inspired grille placed on a fairly large bumper. Smartly designed headlamps, separated by a single slat grille accommodating the Ford logo, form the rest of the front fascia. The front bumper also stocks the chrome surrounded fog lamps which are housed on either side of the massive grille. Ford had provided this SUV with black plastic cladding all around, which at the front is sculpted at the edges. The side profile gets a shoulder crease and swelled up wheel arches. At the rear, it gets an external mounted spare wheel which provides it with an SUV like feel. The rear window which wraps itself around the edges is provided with a small spoiler on top. Ford EcoSport gets wrap around taillights and roof rails.
The interiors remain largely black, with silver highlights on the dashboard and door panels. Though the interiors are stylish and modern in appearance, the black hard plastics are inferior in quality. The upper half of the centre console accommodates a screen for the multimedia system which is replaced by a cubby hole in the low spec variants. The top-spec variants comes with ample feature comforts such as Key-less entry, start stop button, rear parking sensors and Microsoft’s SYNC interface. Though the sitting position is quite high, the wide A-Pillars hinders visibility to a great extent. Eco Sport gets 362 litres of boot capacity which can be increased to 705 litres with both the rear seats folded down. The SUV is only 127cm wide which makes seating for 3 at the rear a tight squeeze.
Engine and performance
The petrol powered Ford EcoSport comes with two engine options, a 1.0 litre Ecoboost unit producing 125bhp and 170Nm of torque and a bigger 1.5 litre unit which churns out 112bhp and 140Nm or torque. The diesel powered compact SUV comes with a 1.5 litre unit that produces 91bhp and 204Nm of torque. The power is transmitted to the wheels with the help of a manual 5-speed gearbox. An automatic shift is also available but only on the 1.5 litre Titanium variant.
With its competitive pricing, Ford EcoSport competes against the likes of Renault Duster, Nissan Terrano, Mahindra Quanto with more competition soon arriving in the market.
