The name Skoda might not sound as lucrative as say a Honda or Hyundai, but still for many it is the command of brilliant built quality and great performance. With that in its favour, the Czech automaker recently updated its C-segment sedan the Rapid with a substantial facelift. To take on the likes of highly popular Honda City and Hyundai Verna among others, can the 2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift do a bit better than its predecessor and at the same time hold its ground against competition? let us find out!
2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift: Exterior
Unlike the earlier Rapid, this new upgrade is substantially different from what it was in the past especially in regards to the front end. Redefining the Czech automakers latest design philosophy, this sedan looks more aggressive than before. Thus it is characterized by the new age grille with projector headlamps on either side that stand to provide DRLs. In fact if we are only talk about the headlamps over here then lets us tell you that they are very similar to the ones on the All-New Skoda Octavia. It’s rather spread out fog lamps lend it a distinctive face as does the presence of a muscular bonnet especially the centre strip that incorporates the Czech automakers insignia.
The lower lip of the front bumper is sharper than before while the sides remain mostly the same with the introduction of chrome strip onto the door handles with this facelift. Rest OVRM’s with turn indicators are an integral part of the design while 5 spoke alloy design adorn the profile. Coming to the rear, the story no different here either as the only change worth taking note of off is lip spoiler and a thin chrome line running right across the boot lid.
2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift: Interior
Now if you were thinking that the cabin would be refreshed then mind you, there isn’t a drastic change. The only things which have been enhanced is the steering wheel design followed by a touch screen audio system and a card holder. Rest is all the same like before, a dual tone interior (black and beige) with leather upholstery on offer.
Since there is no change in the dimensions, one can say safely that the insides remain comfortable as before with ample of head, shoulder and legroom upfront as well as towards the rear. Adequate use of chrome throughout the cabin further enhances the overall experience of this vehicle. Its touch screen multimedia system with the facility of Bluetooth feels very intuitive as the sound quality is good and can keep the occupants entertained while on the move.
2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift: Engine and Specification
Skoda India has introduced the 2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift with no mechanical upgrades. Thus the power trains propelling the petrol and diesel variants are the same as before. They are the 1.6 mpfi petrol and 1.5 TDi diesel units. Though out of these, we got the petrol variant to test and we must say that despite it being the same power plant as before, this engine is impressive. Having power figures of 105 bhp with 153 Nm torque, this 1598cc engine is very refined and smooth. In fact the 5 speed manual transmission on board further helps in enjoying the drive by providing perfect shifts.
Though in our opinion there should have been an additional gear, that aside, it still does the job extremely well. As for its driving dynamics, the Rapid soaks in potholes and broken roads with utter ease. Having mentioned this, we all are aware that built quality is not really an issue out here but for some reason the Rapid which we had for this test did clink a little. Wonder whether this could be a one off issue? Its handling characteristics are up to the mark be it on turns or curves this sedan does not disappoint.
2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift – Verdict
There is no doubt that the New 2016 Skoda Rapid Facelift just does not feel updated, but the new design further complements the overall exterior package. The interiors are spruced up a wee bit in reference to the infotainment system on-board and the abundant use to chrome that makes the cabin stand out. With performance of a petrol engine that allows the user to enjoy the power delivery within city as well as on the highway. On the whole, the New Skoda Rapid facelift is worth considering while going in for a C Segment sedan between INR 7.5 to 12 lakhs (ex-showroom Delhi).
