Often in our lives, we come across a number of things, with which, even after a brief interaction, it takes us no time to come to the conclusion that in their category, they are the best, the perfect that one could offer. That in totality, these things stand as complete package and nothing comes even close to challenge their capabilities or characteristics. That these things were made in such an ideal way that there exists no scope for improvement, that if done, the modifications could very well just end up ruining the same and that we accept, if their exists any flaws just so that they are comparatively minute in comparison to the aggregate of its positives.
But then, we as human beings strive towards improvement, that our whole civilization has been based on the very philosophy of moving forward and keep making things better. If not be this attitude, we would still be using a stone and some wood to produce fire or living out of dead animal skin for clothes. This is the very attitude which made us graduate from bullock carts to gasoline propelled vehicles to now electric propelled flying machines. This is the very attitude that now we have among us, the Grand i10 facelift, the new 2017 avatar of Hyundai’s immensely sort after and seemingly impressive urban compact hatchback.
In the year 2013, Hyundai introduced the Grand i10 in India in order to take on Maruti’s all time big success, the Swift and to replace the aging i10. After its launch, the Grand i10, thanks to its premium, stylish and feature loaded characteristics, not only started eating into the buyer profile of the Swift and contrary to the expectations, created its very own segment of the compact urban hatchback. So does the 2017 Grand i10 facelift come as a worthy update for this hatchback? Let’s take a closer look!
2017 Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift: Exteriors
Hyundai has been partially generous with the amount of cosmetic updates provided to the Grand i10 with this 2017 facelift, not that the car needed much of them anyway. The entire front bumper, along with the single slat grille has been remodeled. Though remaining similar in shape, the bumper gets a large, Hyundai signature hexagonal air-dam, highly molded housing for fog-lamps that now incorporates day-time running LED lights, circular lamps and air intake slats for the betterment of the vehicle’s aerodynamic capabilities. A little above, one is to find that the grille assembly now gets a slightly modified chrome garnish.
The side profile of the 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 facelift is identical to the previous model that it replaces with the only new addition to be seen are the newly designed diamond cut alloy wheels. Walk towards the rear of this hatchback and here again, the modifications done are limited towards the lower end i.e. the bumper. Here this section incorporates a large black plastic cladding fitment which houses two circular reflector lights on either side lending it a sort of an European look.
2017 Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift: Interiors
To take a notice of other new additions given to the 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 facelift, one would have to step inside the cabin. In the higher variants of Sports(O) and Astra, buyers will now be provided with a 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system which offers connectivity to one’s smartphone through services like Apple Car Play, Android Auto and Mirror Link. Controls of the same have been provided on the steering wheel and can also now be accessed through voice command. There is also the provision of reverse parking camera along with sensors, which off course increases this vehicle’s practicality quotient.
For added comfort of rear-passengers, the Grand i10 facelift now comes with rear air-con vents, which were indeed quite effective in performing their duties. The rest of the interior layout be it the dashboard design or other ergonomic specifics remain identical as before. The 2017 Grand i10 facelift continue to boast of a superior cabin material quality which by far is the best in its segment, be it the large door or dashboard panels of small button and dials to operate other features.
2017 Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift: Engine and Performance
With the facelift, Hyundai has kept the petrol engine specifics along with the transmission units same as before but have introduced a new 1.2-litre CRDi diesel mil in replacement of the old 1.1-litre oil-burner. The one that we got to sample was the petrol 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT engine that was paired to the 4-speed automatic transmission unit. The power generation capabilities continue to stand at 82 Bhp along with 113Nm of peak torque. The driving dynamics of this particular combination remain identical to the previous model.
The vehicle, thanks to the smooth sifts from the auto unit, is a breeze to drive in traffic. The up as well as the down shifts are seamless and will not be felt unless the throttles peddle is pushed too hard. Talking about pushing too hard, the gearbox does feel a tad bit unresponsive with the overall response being a bit unenthusiastic in comparison to its own manual cousin. That said, in gear acceleration is not to disappoint you and there the provision of a semi-manual mode where-in one can take control in their own hands. We did not get to sample the vehicle out on the highways, at higher speeds, but were quite impressed by its city driving capabilities.
The other driving dynamics of the 2017 Hyundai Grand i10 facelift are identical to the previous model. The ride quality is supple, the suspension absorbs bumps quite well, with the car feeling relatively stable at city cruising speeds. The cabin is well insulated, keeps the road and tyre noises as bay, accentuating the vehicle’s overall premium feel.
2017 Hyundai Grand i10 Facelift: Verdict
So, has the facelift provided to the Grand i10 truly worthy of messing with an existing icon? Taking a stock of all the revision done, which includes improving the hatchback’s aesthetic appeal along with adding considerable features on board, it seems like Hyundai has yet again stricken the right cord with the Grand i10. In its new avatar, this urban compact hatchback becomes even more so competitive to future upcoming products in its category, primarily from the likes of its biggest competitor, Maruti Suzuki.
