We informed you earlier that Tata Motors is currently working on developing to new SUVs, code-named as Tata Q501 and Tata Q502 which it is to base on Land Rover Discovery platform. Now, according to a report published in ET Auto, it is to be believed that these SUVs will be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, sourced from Fiat.
Tata Motors has just struck a deal with Fiat India Automobile, a joint venture between Tata Motors and Fiat, to order 70,000 units of the later’s 2.0-litre multijet engines.
Talking about the upcoming Tata Q501 and Q502 SUVs, based on the Land Rover platform, these are to establish themselves as the flagship products for Tata Motors in India. Do Read: Tata Q501; could this be the surprise SUV in the form of a Land Rover Discovery?
The homegrown automaker has however established it well head that apart from the underpinnings, these two new products will share almost nothing else with the Land Rovers and hence will have their own unique identity.
It is expected that the Tata Q501 SUV will be coming to India by 2018, after the Tata Nexon which is scheduled to launch later this year. It is likely to be priced in the bracket of INR 18 to 22 lakh and hence will compete against the likes of Hyundai Tucson and the Jeep Compass. The same is also speculated to take on the likes of Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner.
Tata Motors is not the only Indian company to source engines from Fiat, Maruti Suzuki has also ordered a total of 2.2 lakh units of the former’s 1.3-litre multi-jet engine for its products.
