Come 1st March 2017 and Range Rover is going to introduce a new member to its already extravagant range of SUVs. To be called the Velar, this new 4×4 is to take up its place in between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport.
The origin of the Velar name (pronounced vel-ar) dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the Sixties: the pioneers of the luxury SUV landscape.
When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rover vehicles, they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin ‘velare’ meaning to veil or cover. Also Read: 2017 Range Rover Evoque petrol launched in India at INR 53.20 lakh
Land Rover Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern, said: “We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”
Going by the teased images, it becomes clear that the Velar will be bigger in dimensions than the Evoque and a bit concise than the ones seen on the Range Rover Sport. Also Read: 2016 Range Rover Sport does the impossible
No details regarding the engine specifications of the Velar have been revealed. Neither is there any information as to what other gadgets and gizmos this SUV is to come with. However, one thing is for sure that being a Land Rover, the Velar will get, just like its siblings, un-matched off-road capabilities.
