Earlier this year, Jeep, the iconic American SUV manufacturer made its debut in India. It landed with three SUVs in its portfolio, which were the Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee SRT and the Wrangler unlimited. Because of the fact that all these vehicles were direct imports, their price tags where quite overwhelming. According to a recent report published in Autocar India, the automaker is likely to introduce petrol powered derivatives of both the Wrangler and Cherokee in India by next month.
Apart from making the base variant of these SUVs cheaper, the same will also prevent them from any regulation, if imposed, on diesel vehicles in the future. The report further states that the petrol powered Wrangler and Cherokee will come equipped with the same 3.6-litre V6 engine. The same will produce 285bhp along with 353Nm of peak torque in the Wrangler. While its power figures will be upped to 395Bhp when placed in the Grand Cherokee. For the Wrangler petrol, the transmission responsibilities will be handled by a 5-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Grand Cherokee petrol will get a 7-speed automatic gearbox.
How much of a difference will it make on the prices? Well, the costs of the Jeep Wrangler are expected to go down by INR 18 to 20 lakh while that of the Grand Cherokee are likely to slash by INR 15 lakh. At the moment, the Jeep Wrangler retails at a price of INR 71.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) while the prices for the Grand Cherokee starts at INR 93.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
