Fiat has launched the all new Grande Siena in Chile – and boy, does it look good! The new Siena overshadows the earlier model by being bigger, more spacious – both for the passengers as well as their luggage – and offers better features too. Being based on the Punto platform, the Siena is also expected to be a good handler amongst other things.
Design-wise, the new Siena borrows cues and equipment from the new Palio which was recently launched in South America. While the dual-barrel headlights and the horizontal taillights look very elegant, we particularly like the treatment given to the front bumper. We expect the new bumpers on the Linea facelift to follow a similar direction too. The new Siena also hosts a new grille design with a thick chrome moustache that holds the Fiat emblem. Under the hood the new Siena gets 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre engines that run on the flex-fuels that the South American market in known for.
The Fiat Siena was present in India almost a decade back and like the Palio on which it was based, the car didn’t taste the kind of success it deserved. Unfortunately, same is the case with the Punto and the Linea that are currently sold in India. However, looking at the elegance of the new Siena’s design and knowing the robustness of Fiat’s mechanicals, we can’t help but wish that the Siena comes back to the Indian market.
It does look like a package that is good enough to take on the likes of the Mahindra Verito, Toyota Etios, and even the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire for that matter – but considering the cold treatment that the Fiat brand unfortunately receives in India, we doubt how good a proposition it is for our market. And then the Uno, Palio and Siena are dreaded names in the Indian market – so we don’t think Fiat will consider bring back any of these.
