Indian roads being one of the most treacherous in the world, Indian government has finally decided to take safety aspects seriously. As per the survey conducted last year, more than 400 people lost their lives due to road accidents on daily basis which accounts a single life for every 3.6 minutes. In order to control the increasing figures of road accidents, the Indian government is looking to introduce these 5 essential safety features in the cars.
Inclusion of driver side airbag as a standard fitment has been done quite in few cars such as Brezza, Polo and Etios prior to the new rules to be implemented with BNVSAP. An airbag plays an essential role in preventing any injuries from hitting the steering wheel or any other part of the vehicle. The airbag which is placed within the steering wheel is activated by sensor placed at the front of the car based on the impact. Another thing to note is that seat belts is required to be worn for airbags to deploy failing which it may result in more damage.
Seat belt warning
As we mentioned above the airbags will deploy only when the seat belts are worn to which the next safety feature will play essential role in here. The inclusion of seat belt warning system turns on the warning lamp if the seat belt is not worn. Introduction of this safety feature will be essential if all the vehicles are made compulsory with one airbag. When a person sits inside the car, the sensors detect the weight which turns on the warning lamp indicating the driver to wear the seat belt to complete the circuit so that the airbags can be deployed when required in emergency.
Rear parking sensors
The next safety feature which is expected to make to the list of mandatory feature is rear parking sensors which is also another safety oriented feature as rear view mirrors are sometime inadequate in detecting small objects or children when too close to ground. In that scenario, the parking sensors come in handy. Moreover, with the 18th World Road meeting in Delhi, Mr. Abhay Damle, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated that an announcement will be sent to all manufacturers to include rear parking sensors as a standard on all the cars.
Speed warning device
Another reason that causes fatal accidents in the country is over speeding. In the same World Road meeting, Mr. Abhay mentioned that above 50,000 fatal accidents caused are due to excessive speeding. In order to curb the same, the government is making steps to make speed warning beep mandatory on all vehicles on the lines of the seatbelt warning lamp. For instance, a beep would be alarmed when the driver speeds up the car above 80 Kmph and continuous beeping post 90 Kmph.
Improved and obdurate body structure
As the part of homologation, all the cars will undergo the crash test by the next year which will be carried out by the new BNVSAP for which 3 centers have already been setup to carry out the crash tests in India. The Maruti Vitara Brezza Compact SUV is derived as the first vehicle to be homologated with the future features and norms. Improved crumple zone is essentially a well intended which is intended to compress and take the force of the impact which also assists as a cushion during the impact. As the crash testing of the car will be mandatory, it is believed that the cars will get better crash structure as well as improved safety standards as well.
